Chapter one: Getting Started
HTML - CSS - editors - accessibility

HTML editors:

Building a site with a bells'n'whistles WYSIWYG editor like Microsoft FrontPage may seem like the best way to go - after all, why dirty your hands with that pesky HTML stuff when the program can do it all for you?

Trouble is, the template-led approach of many of these programs can often result in bland sites with bloated code and an unenviable reputation for knocking out bloated code that renders unreliably in some browsers.

Fortunately, newer programs like Macromedia's Dreamweaver and Adobe's GoLive have gone some way to producing more compliant code, although serious coders may prefer the total control of advanced text-based editors like Homesite 5

For those on a budget tighter than a crab's arse, 1st Page (with its near-Homesite functionality) and the 'careware' Arachnophilia should be considered.

Both programs are completely FREE, although the author of Arachnophilia asks that you "stop whining about how hard your life is" in exchange. Which seems fair enough!
