Planning the site
Deciding on what kind of site you're going to build is obviously a mighty important decision and not one best made after a night out in the pub. Take time out to weigh up your objectives: are you hoping to sell goods or services, promote yourself or your company, provide an online resource or just show the world what a wacky and cray-zeee dude you are?
If you're starting off in web design, considering building up your portfolio by doing a freebie site for a local charity, campaign or store - but make sure you're given enough freedom to experiment - the last thing you want is Mrs Jones insisting that include a photo of her pet cat, Tiddles.
Once you've decided on your idea, talk to friends and colleagues about your plans and ask for their feedback. If they think your idea's crap, ask them why and listen to their suggestions.
Keep your plans realistic and achievable. It's far better to start with a small, concise and regularly updated site that can deliver on its promises and grow as time and budget allows.
See the section on information architecture for more planning advice.
