Chapter four: Designing the site
design - branding - screensize
How wide should my page be?
Because you've no way of knowing what screen will be used to view your site - it could be anything from a 60" plasma monster to a tiddly PDA screen - trying to produce a site that looks good on all browsers and all resolutions is an impossible task.
Unfortunately, there's no simple solution. Dynamically resizing pages can offer the best compromise for accessibility, but these can look spectacularly ugly on wide monitors.
Many major sites have settled for fixed screen widths of between 580-760 pixels with the ability to 'degrade' down to smaller screens, but even these will often look horrendous when crushed down to fit MSN-TV (544x372 pixels) and AOL-TV (585x386) screens.
Whatever you decide upon, I strongly recommend you do not use javascript to force the browser to fill the screen. That's like being invited into someone's home and then hogging their entire sofa.
